My Military History

Below is a chronological history of my activity in the U. S. Navy.  The evaluation remarks are highlights that are relevant to supporting my career path.  Most of the citations and awards also reflect my achievements in Information Technology.

Basic Training "Boot Camp"    -    October 10, 1987 - March 15, 1988

USS Capodanno (FF-1093)    -    December 2, 1988 - June 1, 1991

Duties:

Preventive and corrective maintenance on radar and communication systems.  Electronic Test Equipment Calibration Coordinator.

Evaluation Remarks:

- Petty Officer Contreras is a highly self motivated individual and has continued to display it with an outstanding work ethic and exceptional knowledge of his rating.

- He displays a strong desire to share his knowledge as evident in his efforts to train newly reported juniors.

 

- Petty Officer Contreras is an excellent Electronics Technician whose drive and diligence keep him constantly striving to better himself.  He has an excellent command of the English language.

- As Test Equipment Petty Officer, developed computer programs to effectively manage and streamline the task of equipment recall for calibration.

Duties:

Preventive and corrective maintenance on radar, communication and navigation systems.  Assistant Security Manager.  Prepared Security briefs and debriefs.

Evaluation Remarks:

- Exceptionally talented as a speaker and writer, conveying precise thoughts and concepts when addressing a group or on a one-to-one basis.  Always ready meet changing operational situations, providing innovative ideas and solutions.  Consistently demonstrates the highest caliber of conduct, military appearance and professionalism.

- Petty Officer Contreras consistently demonstrates the maturity of a top performer and that he can make proper decisions without sacrifice to morale or harmony.  He is resourceful and has unlimited skills that will help make him a superb First Class Petty Officer.

Duties:

Group Paced Instructor for Satellite link controller course.

Evaluation Remarks:

- Petty Officer Contreras is a very knowledgeable technician who displays an excellent talent for system troubleshooting and corrective maintenance.  Rapidly progressing towards becoming and outstanding Navy Instructor.  Continually researches all reference materials available to ensure curriculum validity.  Utilizes his vast fleet experiences to embellish course material.

- Displayed superb podium technique while qualifying as a Navy Instructor and thoroughly enjoys interacting with students.

- Willingly spends additional time with students providing individual instruction when requested.

- Articulate, conveying his thoughts clearly and works well with students and fellow instructors.  An excellent Team Player.

 

- Talented and competent instructor.  Utilized his Distinguished Instructor skills to provide top quality training to 32 students in two courses of instruction.

- Active in the community.  Provided excellent support to his church, assisting with building maintenance, managing and conducting the choir and performing computer maintenance.

USS Monongahela (AO-178)    -    December 20, 1996 - September 19, 1999

Duties:

Network Security Officer, Local Area Network Manager and Primary Office Information Systems Technician.  Performed operations and maintenance on information systems and Xerox copiers.  Preventive and corrective maintenance on radar, communication and navigation systems. 

Evaluation Remarks:

- Knowledge of personal computers (PC) has been proven invaluable.  Repaired/salvaged and upgraded three microcomputers.

 

...Groomed and standardized PC workstations to operate with the same operating system.  Self-taught on all current PC configurations aboard.

- Organized and performed the hardware/software installations and set-up of the Learning, Multimedia and Resource Center, and all command PC workstation hardware/software upgrades.

 

- Designed and installed a Local Area Network (LAN) that connected all PC Workstation together and resulted in more efficient access to the predominantly used computer programs.  This effort enhanced the flow of much needed information throughout the command.

- Trained the Automated Data Processing Security Officer and workstation users on LAN use.

 

... Coordinated the repairs and logistics needs of all Office Information Systems that provided superb reliability and availability to support the ship's mission.

- Expertly coordinated the difficult task of relocation of all office systems and the ship's LAN to a barge in support of the decommissioning process.

Leading Petty Officer and LAN Manager for the Information Systems Department.  Administrated Exchange Server 5.5 Enterprise Edition on Compaq Clustered server using Microsoft Cluster Server.

Completed certifications for Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer + Internet, Cisco Certified Network Associate, CompTIA A+, Network+ and iNet+.

Transferred to California December 16, 2000.  Honorably Discharged.
